Puppies, IKEA and bike parts; things we have learned to live without in the past two years. Searching for the components, parts and accessories necessary to build a new bike is daunting, but we have a few tricks up our sleeves to help you get on a new frame.
New Frame, Repurposed Parts
It just so happens that our straightforward approach to designing frames makes most VYNL bikes quite compatible with a variety of parts, both old and new. A bit of resourcefulness and out-of-the-box combinations can have you rolling on a snappy and lively VYNL bike.
VYNL Gravel Disc
Our all-terrain frontman may be a member of the modern gravel category, but this frame is more compatible than meets the eye. Here are some details to help you source parts and reuse some you may have. Find more on this frame’s specs here.
The Gravel Disc has a threaded 68mm T47 bottom bracket. While a relatively new BB standard, T47 has become a popular threaded BB as it accommodates larger tubing and different crank spindles, adds stiffness and is a creak-free alternative to press fit. T47 BB’s can be found from many manufacturers including Chris King, Wheels MFG, Cane Creek, SRAM, Hope Tech and more.
The Gravel Disc is compatible with all 1x groupsets but you can run a 2x groupset coupled with a wide-spaced bottom bracket.
Mechanical discs, remember those?! Should you run out of all hydraulic disc supply options, you can run mechanical discs on the Gravel Disc. You can also run flat mount disc brakes to XYZ-mount adapters if needed.
VYNL Road Disc
Our hell-raising fast and stiff Road Disc frame is very similar to our Gravel Disc but designed around a 2x groupset. Find more on this frame’s specs here.

Road Disc is compatible with any 2x disc groupset, hydraulic or mechanical.
VYNL Road Rim
Our founding member is our most compatible frame. A common bottom bracket + external routing + traditional rim brakes make this frame oh so buildable! Find the complete specs here.
All modern groups from any manufacturer with current hub spacing will fit this frame. Yep, time to resurrect your old 10-speed! Heck, you can even run the Road Rim with 1x.
Our Road Rim is spec’d with standard threaded BSA 68mm bottom brackets. This classic English threaded bottom bracket is very common. Manufacturers and supply are readily available.
We’ve been known to make a few tweaks for our customers, such as removing cable bosses to accommodate electronic shifting while still running rim brakes. Many things are possible so please don’t hesitate to contact us!
Scoring Parts
While we don’t have a secret treasure trove of chains, brake pads or groupsets, we have found some luck sourcing parts from the following:
First and foremost, start with your local bike shop. When all else fails, try larger independent shops in major bike destinations. The best shops have done a good job of stocking from distributors when they can. Finally, keep an eye on the big online retailers and make a move as soon as they restock.
Other bikes! A new ride doesn’t have to be 100% new. You can achieve that “new bike day” feeling with an upgrade here and there while repurposing older components. While making the swap, be sure to deep clean and re-grease all drivetrain parts and replace what’s worn for a fresher pedal.
Don’t fear the Ebay! We hope this deeper dive into our specs helps you find what you need for your VYNL. If not, please don’t hesitate to email us at info@vynlbikes.com.
